How many farms are in the United States?

The other day, while browsing Instagram, I saw an interesting comment on a video. The video was detailing some data on American farmers and the comment in question said, “Wow! I didn’t know America still had farms.”

Yes, the United States still has a ton of farms. Have some people thought farming is no longer a thing here? Farming is still, and in my opinion, always, will be a thing here in the United States. Even with the development of vertical farming technology and countless other innovations in the sector, old-school farming will be around for as long as we are.

But, just how many farms are there in the US? After doing some digging online, here are some crazy numbers I’ve found. There are just over 2,000,000 farms currently in the United States. That includes both small-scale and large-scale farms. Both those thousand-acre farms and your buddy down the road that owns a couple of dozen cattle. And in terms of acreage, which blows my mind, farms have around 895,000,000 acres! That’s a looooot of the land of the U.S.’s 2.43 Billion acres. That includes both row crops, grazing areas, etc.

No in terms of how many people work on all that land? Only about 10% of the population here in the US. That’s a small percentage that is responsible for not only a large amount of land but also responsible for feeding a lot of people…three times a day…every day!

So there are some numbers for you as I’m finishing coffee #1 and about to get coffee #2.

Do you think 2,000,000 is a lot of farms? Did you guess over or under? Let me know in the comments below! And if you’re a farmer, let us know what you do and how you do it.
